The Across Latitudes and Cultures BRT Centre of Excellence invites to its monthly webinar series to share timely public transit research and encourage ongoing collaboration. Our July webinar was:
Integrating timetabling and vehicle scheduling to analyze the trade-off between well-timed transfers and the fleet size.
Presented by Omar Ibarra, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, on August 1st 2014, 11 am Eastern Daylight Time (New York).

In transit systems there is a trade-off between the level of service and operating costs. At the planning level, for a given network design, this trade-off is captured by timetabling (TT) and vehicle scheduling (VS) problems. In this talk we address the TT problem that maximizes the number of passengers benefited by well-timed transfers and the VS problem that minimizes the fleet size. We show our proposed optimization formulations for the TT and VS problems based on a simplified transit network. Besides, we combine TT and VS in a bi-objective integrated formulation which is solved using the epsilon-constraint algorithm. Then, we analyze the trade-off between passenger transfers and the fleet size in terms of Pareto fronts.
Please email Omar at oibarrar@uc.cl with any questions or future topic suggestions. The series is open to anyone and will address issues relevant to researchers and practitioners. Please share this announcement with your extended network.
