On December 14-16, the Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CSUD), Columbia University, will be hosting the 2010 Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) Center of Excellence Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. Bringing together eight international VREF Centers of Excellence, the workshop will focus on cutting edge research and pressing policy issues focused on the future of urban transport. An important theme of this year’s conference will be an appraisal of the significant inter-related transport, land use and policy challenges through the lens of research into the rapidly urbanizing Nairobi Metropolitan Region. This theme takes on a new sense of urgency as the recently adopted Kenyan constitution involves redefining urban governance through decentralization and new land laws, creating new possibilities for the realization of improved metropolitan development. For the past five years, CSUD, as a VREF Center of Excellence, has been exploring and confronting the land use and transport component of this challenge through collaborations with a rich network of local university, policy institute, governmental and NGO partners. Generously funded by VREF, this workshop’s plenary sessions and presentations will showcase high quality research and policy discussion on how to achieve sustainable transport and land-use issues in the Nairobi Metropolitan Region and in other key urban locations around the world.
