Bus Rapid Transit Systems: Metro on surface or high performance bus system?

Most BRT systems can be classified into either open or closed. The basic difference is that a closed BRT system evolved from the concept of introducing a metro system on the surface and an open BRT system has evolved from the concept of creating a high performance bus system. As cities in different continents and different land use patterns adopt BRT systems, the benefits and costs of introducing one system vs the other are being debated. In this presentation we discuss various features of the two systems and conclude that while closed BRT system has higher operational performance from operators’ perspective, open BRT systems perform better for users. The choice of the system depends on the larger vision and objective of introducing BRT system in cities.
