Modelling Mode and Route Choices on Public Transport Systems

Understanding travellers’ behaviour is a key element in transportation planning, particularly when analysing travel decisions such as mode and route choices. In traditional transit assignment models, travellers are usually assumed to simply minimize travel time or consider a limited set of attributes. The purpose of this study is to expand our understanding of what travellers take into account when making travel decisions. The results show that a wide variety of attributes and characteristics are significant, such as: different time components, fare and income, transfer experience, train crowding, and network topology. Choice-set generation, path overlapping and common lines considerations are also analysed from a behavioural point of view.
